Overview
Smart technologies; traffic modelling and simulation
QUT is partnered with industry, government and academia in researching the latest applications of intelligent transport systems (ITS), using smart technologies and traffic modelling and simulation to deliver optimum traffic management.
Other focus areas of research will include vehicle emission modelling and traffic noise mapping, monitoring of traffic safety and the effects of weather on driver behaviour, as well as the exploration of international traffic management models used in the Europe and Japan.
Methodologies to predict travel time
Led by Professor Edward Chung, our research develops methodologies to predict travel time by fusing data from various sources such as traffic sensors, signal timings, probe vehicles and meteorological station; and match the current traffic pattern with historical records.
Mobile application
These methodologies could be implemented at traffic control centres to provide real time information to transport users either on the internet, SMS, radio or mobile application.
This information will help in dispersing congestion temporally and spatially and therefore maximises the utilisation of existing transport infrastructure.

Partnerships
In 2009, QUT in collaboration with industry, assessed the maturity of the South-East Queensland transport network, mirroring similar exercises undertaken in other major cities overseas.
