Doubts and Questions

Confident in your own sphere? Going from strength to strength in your work? But are you, perhaps, a little less confident in your ability to tackle the brave new world of postgrad study years after you last sat in a lecture theatre? Things have changed a lot at uni in recent years, it's true, but let us reassure you that the new experiences which await you as a postgrad student at QUT will be overwhelmingly positive.

Virtually everything that's changed since you were last at university has changed for the better.

QUT courses and modes of study now allow for maximum flexibility when it comes to choosing when, where and how you tackle your coursework. QUT's use of multiple advanced technologies makes staying on top of lectures, research, and study easier and more productive than ever before. The technology is not something to be scared of: it's there to serve you. And our staff make themselves available to help you become proficient in its use. Not forgetting their eagerness to help you meet head-on, the various challenges of a packed life as a postgrad student.

University now

Play to your strengths. As a postgraduate student, you'll rub shoulders with some of the country's best and brightest. Which, rather than making you nervous, should inspire you to even greater heights. Remember, your added life experience and confidence means that you're better equipped than ever to contribute in group projects and do well at university.

People like you. A high proportion of the QUT student body are non-school leavers. Many will be in the same boat as you, so you won't feel out of place.

Try it. QUT welcomes new students who'd prefer to dip their toe in the water before making a major commitment to postgrad study. Start out by taking one subject at a time, then ramp it up once you gain confidence.

Time enough? While the amount of time you put in to postgrad study is largely up to you, you'll need to allow around three hours a week contact time per subject as a minimum, plus additional time for research and study - perhaps 6-8 hours a week. For working people, not an impossible task. Of course, the amount of time you should devote to studying can increase according to the number and complexity of subjects you take on.

Tech savvy. QUT is recognised as a leader in harnessing clever technology to promote learning, save your time and make study easier. The technology, however, isn't daunting. Once you have a closer look at amazing resources like QUT's Online Learning and Teaching website, and QUT Virtual - a personalised web service that gives you secure access to a world of relevant online resources - you'll embrace it as your friend.

Help. QUT offers regular free seminars in how to use the university's outstanding library resources, and library staff are always available to help you, one-on-one. You can also use instant messaging, for real-time assistance in the course of your studies, on campus, at work, or at home.

More Help. QUT's IT Helpdesk is another great source of advice. Their brief is to deliver real, workable solutions to student questions, within a set time-frame. Speak to them face to face or on the phone, or make contact via email.
