Centralised Assessment and Selection Program (CASP)

The Centralised Assessment and Selection Program (CASP), is an admissions pathway that can assist Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people enter most undergraduate and some postgraduate (coursework) courses at QUT.

We’ll look at your previous study, personal achievements and your attributes within a more relaxed and culturally supportive environment to see if we can give you a better chance of getting into the course you want.

Why apply?

Future Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander QUT students are encouraged to participate in CASP because you:

• generally,  find out if you have been accepted to QUT, at the completion of the CASP process, which can occur before the main QTAC offer round
• it gives you the best chance of getting into uni even if you have not completed Year 12 or did not meet the ATAR/rank threshold
• get to meet and have your questions answered on the spot by Oodgeroo Unit staff and members of your faculty - increasing your understanding about the course
• get a snapshot of QUT, university life and the support the Oodgeroo Unit has to offer, as well as making valuable connections.

What is involved?

CASP consists of:

• completing and returning your applicant portfolio including supporting documentation such as resume, school report card and references
• providing evidence of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• 500 word written piece indicating why you want to undertake your chosen degree/s at QUT including the reasons why you believe you have the ability to undertake tertiary level studies; and
• attending an informal interview via Zoom or face-to-face with an Oodgeroo Unit staff member and a representative from the faculty that coordinates your chosen degree.

If you are deemed to be able to academically progress in your chosen degree during the CASP process, QUT will notify QTAC to make you an offer to study in the following semester.

To be considered for CASP, you must be:

• applying for a selected undergraduate or postgraduate course through QTAC
• place a selected QUT course in your top three QTAC preferences
• are of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• are accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which you live or have lived, and can provide the Oodgeroo Unit with evidence of your Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Information supporting your  evidence will be individually assessed.

You must identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in accordance with E/3.4 Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent

You'll need to provide the Oodgeroo Unit with formal evidence of your Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and acceptance by an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community. Other forms of evidence will be individually assessed.

If you cannot obtain a Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent documentation in the timeframe required, we still encourage you to  apply for CASP and contact the Oodgeroo Unit.

The Oodgeroo Unit cannot make recommendations for applicants applying for Bachelor of Education degrees if they do not meet the prerequisites and additional entry requirements. If you do meet the prerequisites and additional entry requirements, you can apply through CASP, please contact the Oodgeroo Unit if you are unsure and staff may be able to assist you.

The Oodgeroo Unit cannot make recommendations for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) degree additional entry process within the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice.

How to apply

Applications for CASP Semester 2, 2024 are open until 25 June 2024.

Step 1: Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander when you apply for your course

When you apply for your courses through QTAC, make sure you:

• identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• list at least one QUT course in your top three preferences.

QTAC sends us the record of all identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders people who apply for QUT courses.

If you are in Year 12 and submitting a QTAC application, make sure to use a personal email address.

Step 2: Apply through our CASP Application form directly

The link is on our website however once you have applied to QTAC we will email you an application pack. If you would like to be considered for the CASP Pathway complete the form and include:

• your application portfolio
• any supporting documentation e.g. resume, school report card or references
• evidence of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• 500 word written piece indicating why you want to undertake your chosen degree/s at QUT including the reasons why you believe you have the ability to undertake tertiary level studies.

You will receive a notification when we have received your application and will subsequently advise the time and date of your interview.

Step 3: Attend your interview

You will have an informal interview with an Oodgeroo Unit staff member and a representative from the faculty that coordinates your chosen degree where we will:

• discuss you application, hear more about your story or journey to applying to QUT
• assess your potential to study
• provide you with information about your course
• answer any questions or concerns you have about studying at university.

What you need to bring?

You do not need to bring anything to the interview. Just make sure you familiarise yourself with the Kelvin Grove campus before attending your interview.

What happens next?

You will be notified of your outcome at the completion of your interview and recommended to QTAC to study at QUT in the following semester.
