QUT is set to host higher education leaders from across the world at the Times Higher Education (THE) 2017 Young Universities Summit.

The Summit, from April 5-7, will focus on how universities can respond in the face of unprecedented disruption, and adapt and thrive in the digital age.

Some 200 delegates representing institutions and businesses from more than 30 countries will attend the global gathering at QUT’s Gardens Point campus. It is the first time the Young Universities Summit has been held in the Southern Hemisphere.

The 2017 THE 150 under 50 Rankings, which rates the best 150 universities under the age of 50 in the world, will be launched exclusively at the Summit on Wednesday, April 5.

The Summit program includes discussions, debate and keynote addresses on the theme: ‘Disruptive, Dynamic, Distinctive: young universities rising to the challenges of tomorrow’.

Summit highlights include:

  • Keynote: The triple helix effect - great things happen when knowledge crosses borders - Martin Paul, president, Maastricht University (Thursday, April 6, 9am)
  • Keynote: STEM, design and creativity: enabling disruption - Carla E. Brodley, dean, College of Computer and Information Science, Northeastern University (Thursday, April 6, 1.45pm)
  • Keynote: Empowering change in academia  - Maria Klawe, president, Harvey Mudd College (Friday, April 7, 10.15am)
  • Keynote: Opening minds. Shaping the future: the ultimate goal of HE in the globalised world - Timothy W. Tong, president, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Friday, April 7, 1.45pm)

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said QUT was proud to welcome some of the brightest global minds in higher education.

“Young universities face a unique set of challenges and the Summit is an invaluable opportunity to hear insights from speakers from leading universities and international businesses,” he said.

“The higher education sector, like many others, is facing profound transformation. The Summit will address a range of topics, from diversity in leadership to new models of collaboration, and explore how emerging challenges and opportunities will define our future.”
