Mooting and mock trials

Mooting and mock trial skills are essential for students to gain confidence and build their skills, particularly if they want to be admitted to the bar.

Mock trials (moots) teach students the art of courtroom procedure and debate, and how theory is applied. Students are coached and judged by lawyers, barristers and judges who volunteer their time to share their knowledge and create a real-world experience.

Each year we conduct internal moots, compete in interstate and international competitions, and host a competition that attracts entries from universities around the country.

Our students are involved in many competitions, including:

  • QUT Shine Torts Moot
  • The Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
  • The Hon. Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot
  • The International Maritime Arbitration Moot Competition
  • Oxford IP Moot
  • The Family Law Moot Competition
  • The Pan-Pacific Moot Competition
  • QUOTALS, Senior, Junior and First Year Moots
  • AAT Moot
  • Lexis-Nexis Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot
  • National Intervarsity Womens' Moot.

Courtroom

Our electronic moot court is one of Australia's most advanced electronic courtrooms containing state-of-the-art communication technology and audio-visual integration. It’s a crucial resource for students to prepare for competitions and complete assessment. You can also hire our courtroom.

History

Our mooting teams have long had a reputation for being strong competitors in mooting competitions. Our most recent successes include:

  • first place in the Pan-Pacific Moot Competition
  • first place in the Oxford IP Moot.
Most recently, we competed in the International Criminal Court Trial Competition at The Hague, the Netherlands. Our prosecution counsel received the Best Trial Lawyer Award across the competition.

Mooting Society

We are creating a QUT Mooting Society, where experienced mooters will mentor students and practitioners will give specialist presentations.
