Australian words and phrases

While you're living and studying in Brisbane, you might hear some Australian slang terms.

  • Arvo: afternoon
  • Aussie: Australian
  • Bloke: man, guy
  • Bludge: (noun) something easy that requires little effort; (verb) to be lazy
  • Bush: the Outback, the country, anywhere that isn't in town
  • Esky: large, insulated food and drink container, ideal for picnics and barbecues
  • Footy: football
  • Heaps: lots, a lot
  • Lollies: sweets, candy
  • Loo: toilet
  • Servo: petrol station
  • Shout: taking a turn to buy something, usually a round of drinks
  • She'll be right: everything will be okay
  • Thongs: cheap rubber sandals
  • Togs: swimsuit
