Health cover
All international students must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), except students from Norway and Sweden. If you don't have OSHC, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) can cancel your visa. You must organise your OSHC before you leave.
OSHC can cover:
- medical costs
- hospital care costs
- some prescription drugs
- emergency ambulance service.
- family members and pregnancy related costs (additional cost and conditions apply)
You must contact the OSHC provider to determine the type of health cover that suits your needs.
Preferred OSHC provider: Medibank Private
Our preferred provider of OSHC is Medibank Private. You can apply for your OSHC through the Medibank Private website. We have representatives who can help you with OSHC enquiries, including:
- ordering cards
- updating personal details
- renewing membership.
These representatives are at:
- Gardens Point, A Block, Level 1 student lounge
- Kelvin Grove, F Block, Level 6 student centre.
Ordering your Medibank Private OSHC membership card
You can order a Medibank Private OSHC membership card by registering online, over the phone or at a Medibank Private Retail Centre. You won't receive a card until you've ordered one.

Other OSHC providers
If you want to use a provider other than Medibank Private, you should contact other health funds offering OSHC.
You must contact these providers directly. You'll need to show us evidence of your OSHC policy.
Your OSHC must be paid and current while you're studying.
