School of Optometry

We educate high quality health care practitioners who have strong research evidence that informs their practice, fostered through a vibrant internationally recognised research and postgraduate program. Our graduates readily gain employment within optometry, in a diverse range of practice environments.

Unique study opportunity

Our school is the only optometry training facility in Queensland. Our class sizes are relatively small, and students enjoy the opportunity to interact closely with their teachers, and members of the optometry profession.

Purpose-built facilities

Students undertake supervised clinical practice in the new, multimillion dollar QUT Health Clinics facility, where they can experience the full scope of optometry practice, from treating patients with eye disease to prescribing spectacles and contact lenses. Clinical training is supported by our staff, as well as clinical teachers who are optometrists in practice.

Globally recognised research

We have an international reputation for our optometry and vision science research. Our staff visit and work at other research institutions, and we in turn have hosted numerous leading international researchers. Our staff receive international awards for their excellence in research. They serve on the editorial boards of prominent ophthalmic, vision science and optometry journals and on national and international committees and research councils.

Most of our research is conducted through the Vision Improvement Domain of the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.

We have highly regarded staff, who are frequently invited to lecture at state, national and international conferences. Our staff share close links with the Optometrists Association Australia, as well as with other international optometry organisations.
