Future changes to teacher education courses

20 August 2012

Updated 22 February 2013
New national teaching program standards have been recently developed bringing some changes that will have future implications for QUT courses.

QUT is working with the relevant authorities to develop a new suite of programs based on cutting-edge understandings of teacher education and new models for partnerships with schools. These are details available at this time.

Future changes to entry prerequisites for teaching qualifications

From 2016, prerequisites for teacher education undergraduate programs will be introduced as follows:

• at least 'Sound Achievement' in the current QSA Authority Subject of Senior English; and
• at least 'Sound Achievement' in Mathematics (QSA Mathematics A and /or B and /or C or equivalent subject from another jurisdiction); and
• for students entering undergraduate primary and early childhood programs, a Sound Achievement' in a QSA Science subject or equivalent subject from another jurisdiction.

Changes to graduate entry programs
Under new national teaching program standards, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership requires that, in the future, graduate entry teacher education courses will have a minimum two-year duration equivalent.

From 2015 QUT will be offering a two-year graduate entry program for Early Years and Primary teaching.

Our one-year Graduate Diploma in Education (Senior Years) will continue to be available until the 2015 semester one full-time intake, and QUT will move to a two-year program from 2016.

Teaching in dance, drama, music or visual arts
Students interested in teaching dance, drama, music, or visual arts are advised to complete an appropriate undergraduate degree in creative industries. Following completion of this degree, students can apply for entry to a graduate entry teaching program. New graduate entry programs are currently under development.
