Workshop makes scribble fashionable

21 March 2013

Are these some of our famous designers of the future? Talented teenagers and children from across northern Brisbane and Caboolture turned scribble into art when they took part in the inaugural QUT Creative Industries Scribblefest workshop this month.

The t-shirt design workshop attracted 29 students in Year 6 to 12 from local schools and was held at the university's Gardens Point campus in the Brisbane CBD.

QUT Equity's Kate Flynn said it was the finale to the university's Scribblefest competition, which encouraged young people to come up with artwork to include in the official 2013 Explore Uni notebook.

"Explore Uni is an ongoing project that provides school students with free access to university camps, open days and events," she said. "Our aim is to let kids test-drive uni and learn about the support that's available, so that they realise uni is a realistic option for everyone.

"The students who took part in the Scribblefest workshop had all entered artwork in the competition while attending Explore Uni events. It was great to see them back at uni again, showing us even more of their talents!

"They also got to learn about 'design' jobs, tour the QUT Art Museum and check out the giant multimedia touchscreens at The Cube, which is part of QUT's new Science and Engineering Centre."

Schools represented included Caboolture State High, Kilcoy State High, Aspley State High, Earnshaw State College, Tullawong State High, Mitchelton State High, St Columbans College, Redcliffe State High and Mount Samson State School.
