QUT Creative Industries Executive Dean Rod Wissler with 2012 Jennifer Blocksidge Medal winner Charlotte Barrett.
Stage set for professional achievement
A high-achieving QUT technical production student was recently awarded $5000 in a Gardens Theatre ceremony for her academic success.
The 2012 Jennifer Blocksidge Medal was presented to Charlotte Barrett at the Brisbane QUT Acting Showcase earlier this year.
The medal is awarded to a Creative Industries Faculty acting or technical production student each year to assist them in pursuing professional development activities following their graduation from QUT.
Ms Barrett has a GPA of 6.909 and has been awarded a place on the Dean's list for Excellent Academic Performance.
QUT Technical Production Coordinator Carly O'Neill said Ms Barrett consistently demonstrated an "incredibly high level of achievement" in all areas during her time at QUT.
"Not only has Charlotte managed to achieve these outstanding academic results but also performs at an exceptional level in her practical production activity," Ms O'Neill said.
Ms Barrett has performed a number of QUT production roles, including lighting operator on The Crucible, production designer on Letters to God, assistant stage manager on Edward II and is currently a deputy stage manager on Essentially Dance 2012.
"Regardless of the position or the genre of performance, Charlotte's conduct and level of professionalism and skill is beyond what would be expected of a second year student," Ms O'Neill said. "She is well regarded by her peers and teaching staff."
Charlotte intends to use the award money to assist with her secondment and practical placements during her final year of study. The award will enable her to undertake opportunities she thought were not previously possible.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Blocksidge family for their support in creating such a special award for QUT students," QUT Creative Industries Executive Dean Professor Rod Wissler said.
"The encouragement and confidence such an award provides can be pivotal in their career development."
The Jennifer Blocksidge Memorial Fund was established in 2007 to honour the memory of Jennifer Blocksidge, who played a pivotal role in Brisbane and Australian theatre. Ms Blocksidge made contributions to the cultivation of QUT's acting program in its formative years and was for many years a director of La Boite Theatre Company.
