Upgrading from the BS92 to the PhD

It is possible to articulate from the Master of Business (Research) to the PhD, but you should not considered it to be automatic.

If you hold a QUT Masters Scholarship (QMS) you can't articulate as the QMS supports completion of the Research Master's degree.

The QUT Business School strongly prefers that you complete the MBus(Research) before enrolling in a PhD because it equips you for PhD-level work.

If you want to articulate or upgrade, you must meet certain requirements before transferring from provisional to confirmed candidature:

1. a coursework record within the Master of Business (Research) with a minimum grade point average of 5.5 on a 7-point scale
2. a justification from your principal supervisor supporting the articulation and showing evidence of:
   • your quality of work
   • your ability to meet the admission criteria to the PhD
   • your ability to complete the PhD within the normal length of candidature
   • the suitability of the current research topic to be expanded to the scope of a PhD.
3. evidence of research experience in addition to that required for entry to the Master of Business (Research). This would generally be in the form of a research report, although the specific format and content necessarily depends on the form of work that you are reporting on. The work needs to be of sufficient scope and complexity to enable us to evaluate your capacity to conduct research at a PhD level.The manner in which this work is undertaken may vary and may include, but is not limited to:
   • a pilot study
   • a small project independent from the Master's degree
   • a study based upon a sub-set of the data that may be used in the Master's project.
4. a confirmation document.

You must:

• submit evidence of requirements 1, 2 and 3 to the Research Support Office at least four weeks before the anticipated confirmation seminar
• submit requirement 4 two weeks before the anticipated confirmation seminar, assuming the submissions for requirements 1, 2 and 3 are adequate.
