Scholarships and financial support
The QUT Business School offers financial support to higher degree research (HDR) students through a number of schemes. Assistance is available to both domestic and international HDR students.
Scholarships
Annual round scholarships
We coordinate university-funded scholarships through one competitive merit-based round each year. The closing date for both domestic and international applications is the second Friday in October.
Normally we only make scholarships available to full-time students but we may consider part-time scholarships in special cases.
You can only have one base scholarship, but top-up awards are allowed.
To apply you must:
- complete the PR form if you are a domestic prospective student
- complete the FR form (PDF file, 386.88 KB) if you are an international prospective student
- complete the on-line process via QUT Virtual if you are a current student.
Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)
APAs are for domestic PhD applicants, with 1st Class Honours or equivalent.Current honours students should consider applying.

QUTPRAs are suitable for both international and domestic PhD and BS92 applicants but BS92 applicants are unlikely to be competitive.

International Postgraduate Research Scheme (IPRS)
The IPRS is for international PhD applicants only.You'll receive:
- a QUT fee-waiver
- a living allowance (QUTPRA)
- medical costs
- school fees.
QUT Business School scholarships
QUTBS scholarships:- are offered at the discretion of the individual schools
- may act as bridging scholarships leading up to the annual round, e.g. for students who commence after the annual round closing date.
If you are a recipient of a QUTBS scholarship, you must apply in the next available annual round for QUT funding and do this for each year of your candidature.
QUT Business School scholarshipsInstitute top-up scholarships
Institute top-ups:- are for international and domestic PhD students
- may be applicable if the topic is relevant to the institute's research agenda
- are usually around $5,000 per year.
Other scholarships
Some scholarships are available outside the annual round.
Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) (APAI)
APAIs are for domestic and international PhD applicants who are funded through an Australian Research Council (ARC) grant. They are also known as Supervisor Scholarships.QUT Write-Up Scholarship
The QUT Write-up Scholarship:- is available in limited numbers for domestic and international PhD students
- is equivalent to a QUTPRA over a three month duration
- is available only for the preparation and submission of refereed publications after submission of the thesis for external examination
- must be undertaken on-shore at QUT.
Grant-in-Aid Scheme
This scheme:- provides up to 70% towards a return economy airfare for overseas fieldwork or conference attendance
- is often applied for in conjunction with the Postgraduate Research Student Funding Scheme
- is available in limited numbers, based on an annual University allocation.
Vacation Research Experience Scheme
Students work on a current research project under academic supervision for a period of 6 to 10 weeks.This scheme allows high-achieving undergraduate students to:
- gain research experience
- enhance their resume
- get paid in the summer break.

Postgraduate Research Student Funding Scheme
If you are a higher degree research student you are eligible to apply for funding for approved research-related activities.
You must:
- apply before incurring any costs
- obtain your supervisor's approval.
Funding is:
- available for PhD students only after successful completion of Stage 2
- limited to a maximum of $1,500 before confirmation.
If you are:
- a PhD student, you'll receive a maximum of $6,000 over the term of the candidature
- a BS92 student, you'll receive a maximum of $2,000 over the term of the candidature.
Postgraduate research student funding scheme
Air travel and accommodation
You must:
- not pre-pay travel expenses
- apply for funding for airfares from the QUT Grant-in-Aid scheme
- obtain two written quotations for airfares from the two QUT preferred suppliers - Campus Travel and STA Travel
- book all travel using the preferred suppliers - we will not consider alternative travel providers, even if they are cheaper
- provide an estimate of accommodation costs per night.
We will inform you of approval by email. You must contact the finance officer named in the email to organise the travel.
All travel requires Head of School approval. International travel also requires the approval of the Executive Dean.
Research assistants
Funding for research assistants is permitted in exceptional circumstances for routine tasks only.
Basic research skills that must be done by the student are:
- analysis
- coding
- design
- set-up of data files
- writing and running analysis programs
- interpretation of outputs.
Where there is a large amount of data, the supervisor may approve administrative assistance for data entry after the student has designed and demonstrated competence in coding, and has set up the data base structure. The use of assistants should be documented in the thesis.
