Overview of higher degree research programs

Doctor of Philosophy

Duration

3 years full-time
6 years part-time

Program objectives

The Doctor of Philosophy is an advanced academic qualification seen as a requirement for the majority of academic and research positions in a wide range of fields and industries.

It challenges you to demonstrate academic rigour in a broad field of learning and to make an original and substantial contribution to knowledge in that field.

The PhD aims to foster the development of independent research skills, including the capacity to:

  • formulate a significant problem
  • develop mastery of appropriate conceptual and methodological skills
  • relate the research topic to a broader framework of knowledge in a relevant disciplinary area.

The degree is awarded at the QUT level.

Prerequisites

Your admission to the PhD program will depend on:

  • your academic aptitude
  • the availability of:
    • supervision
    • infrastructure and
    • resources needed for your course of study.

You would normally:

  • hold a bachelor's degree with Honours 1 or 2A (or equivalent qualification) or
  • hold a master's degree by research or
  • hold a master's degree by coursework that includes a substantial research component or
  • have satisfactorily completed a PhD qualifying program in your chosen area of study.

If you are an international student, you must meet English language proficiency requirements.

We'll assess you on a program of supervised research and investigation that culminates in production of a thesis. The program normally includes assessed coursework that supports conduct of the research and preparation of the thesis.

You should:

  • have regular face-to-face contact with your supervisor
  • participate in university scholarly activities such as research seminars, teaching and publication.

The length of the thesis will vary according to the topic, but should normally be in the 80-100,000 word range (excluding the bibliography). It should not exceed 100,000 words.

Fees

If you are a domestic student, you'll pay no fees if you do not exceed the course duration.

If you are an international student, you'll pay tuition fees of A$27,400 per year (indicative only).

Program objectives

The degree is awarded at the faculty level.

Prerequisites

  • If you are entering from a pass degree, your undergraduate degree must include a major in an approved area, plus a grade point average of 5.5 or higher on a 7-point scale.
  • Alternatively you can present a case based on evidence of qualifications that demonstrate your capacity to pursue a research degree.
  • For entry without an honours degree, you must complete four approved coursework units (48 credit points) and a dissertation (96 credit points).
  • For entry with an honours degree you must complete a dissertation (96 credit points).

Doctor of Business Administration

Duration

3 years full-time
6 years part-time

Program objectives

The DBA is a research-based qualification. It has been designed to enable business professionals to make a substantial contribution to business practice through the novel application of theoretical frameworks to solve contemporary business problems.

The DBA differs from a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) through its research focus. For a PhD, research needs to make a significant contribution to an area of knowledge. For the DBA, research needs to make a significant contribution to practice, policy or strategy. The research involved in a DBA is applicable to contemporary business issues and is carried out in the context of professional practice. The DBA places emphasis on the 'novel application of theory', as opposed to 'the creation or testing of theory', as is commonly associated with a PhD program.

You will develop your research and discipline based knowledge and skill through coursework units, independent research projects, and through regular participation in professional development workshops and presentations with other cohort candidates.

The degree is awarded at the faculty level.

Prerequisites

Your admission to the DBA program will depend on:

  • your academic aptitude and professional experience
  • the availability of:
    • supervision
    • infrastructure and
    • resources needed for your course of study.
  • an interview with the DBA Director or the Assistant Dean (Research)

You must have completed a minimum of five years senior level business or professional practice experience, and either:

  • a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a GPA of 5.5 (on a scale of 7) or greater from QUT or another recognised institution; or
  • a Masters degree in a business discipline area (e.g. Master of Business) with a GPA of 5.5 or greater from QUT or another recognised institution; or
  • a Bachelor's degree in a business discipline with first or second class Honours Division A, or equivalent, from QUT or another recognised institution.

Assessment

We'll assess you on a program of supervised research and investigation that culminates in production of a thesis. The research project may be produced in a variety of formats that includes a portfolio of small research projects, publications or a longer dissertation. The program normally includes assessed coursework that supports conduct of the research and preparation of your research project.

You should:

  • have regular face-to-face contact with your supervisor
  • participate in university scholarly activities such as research seminars, teaching and publication.

The length of the research project will vary according to the topic, but should normally be 50,000 words or more (excluding the bibliography).

Fees

Your actual fees may vary depending on which units you choose. Refer to the Doctor of Business Administration course details for further information.

This course is only available to Australian citizens or permanent residents, and New Zealand residents.
