Rural Entrepreneurship – On the Interplay between Entrepreneurial Agency and Regional Structure

02 May 2012

Australian Centre of Entrepreneurship Research
Research Seminar Series - Presented by Sabine Muller, University of Aarhus, Denmark.

In this research seminar, I present my current PhD project which examines the nature of the interplay between rural context and entrepreneurial activity, and its effects on various aspects of regional development. It mainly focuses on the indirect social and socio-economic benefits that entrepreneurship generates in rural regions that go beyond economic growth and job creation.

This study is based on a multi-level case study approach with a total of 29 entrepreneurial cases in 3 case study regions. The (preliminary) findings suggest that not only do entrepreneurial activities contribute to regional development in economic terms, but more important entire communities benefit from multifaceted social outcomes. The entrepreneurs extract a range of resources from their surrounding context, which are then combined and/or transformed in a unique way to create very distinct local entrepreneurial activities. These activities contribute to the social well-being of a rural community/region as well as enrich the local context and resource base, serving as a fertile ground for new entrepreneurial activity.

Focusing on this interplay, we can obtain a more nuanced understanding of local, place-bound enterprising agency, and how enterprising activities transform local structures in order to create and sustain regional development.
