Reforming Fundraising Regulation Hyper-Ethical

19 April 2011

Every day in many ways (big and small) charities can be confronted with ethical dilemmas. The public would like to believe that charities are like caped crusaders armed with secret powers. Powers to detect the devious, spy the spurious and unearth the undesirable. Powers that give them the strength to overcome all in the quest to do public good.

But imagine you are the CEO of a charity having a very busy day of unusual requests and bequests. A day like none other. It all seems good on the surface but what should you do when:

  • You are offered a gift of a luxury car for your work purposes;
  • A large corporate wants you to be their chosen charity for a national public appeal starting in two weeks but you only have an authority to fundraise in Queensland;
  • The Chairman of the Board wants you to run a swimsuit beauty contest;
  • You find out another local charity is conducting a door to door appeal without an authority to do so, on the same day you have chosen for your appeal

To make your decisions and get through your day, you need help. The Hyper-ethical shows how a distinguished panel of superheroes would handle these situations and more. Attendees were issued with a 'keepad' to cast their vote and help the panel decide on how to solve each ethical quandary.

Panel:

  • Hon David Hamill, Head of the Premier's Disaster Relief Fund;
  • Alison Sandy, Courier Mail Investigative Journalist;
  • Linda Lavarch, Former Attorney-General;
  • Evan Moorhead, Queensland MP;
  • Chris McMillan, CEO of FIA;
  • Daniel McDiarmid, Global Philanthropic; and
  • Glenn Poole, Queensland Auditor-General.
