As a member of the Australian Technology Network (ATN), QUT signed a Declaration of Commitment to Sustainability (PDF file, 510.43 KB) in 2008 to strive for best university-wide sustainability practice.
In 2009, the ATN extended the commitment to universities achieving ambitious, emission reduction targets and regularly reporting on greenhouse gas emissions, including QUT.
The pledge specified that universities to collectively reduce their carbon emisions to 25% less than the 2007 level, by 2012. This was the first collaborative approach of its kind for the university sector in Australia.
Through our programs and initiatives and by monitoring and recording our environmental performance we fulfill our commitment to sustainability.
Formal governance, high-level planning and reporting procedures are in place to ensure we are accountable for meeting our sustainability-related commitments. The QUT Blueprint3 directs our integration of sustainability in our:
- research and learning
- everyday student and staff activities
- operations and infrastructure.
We have invested in incorporating sustainability into our operations and infrastructure, which can be seen in our programs and initiatives.
Committees reporting to the Vice-Chancellor advise on a range of sustainability issues, include:
Key corporate indicators
Our contributions are reported in the Blueprint3, using our key corporate indicators. We report on:
- financial viability and responsibility
- graduate outcomes
- staff and student experiences
- students well-being
- progress in reducing carbon emissions.
An environment for change
Our outstanding learning environments and programs lead to outcomes that enable our graduates to work in, and guide, a world characterised by increasing change.
We provide outstanding facilities and support programs for staff and students, including Equity and Wellness services.
We also attend to aspects of our bio-physical impact in corporate environmental performance planning and publicly reporting on our success in implementing initiatives.
