Water

Toilets used by 40,000 staff and students require a surprisingly large amount of water. To reduce water usage, QUT:

  • collects and uses rainwater
  • has installed flow restrictors and sensor flushes on all urinals
  • is trialling waterless urinals.

Rainwater tanks are also used for irrigation, which has been restricted to the Kelvin Grove oval under a water efficiency management program. Design guidelines have been updated to ensure all new buildings will reuse rainwater (greywater) for future toilets and irrigation.

A 'Run the Water Wise' education program operates at the start of each semester to promote methods that maximise water efficiency, such as the prompt reporting of all leaks to Facilities Management.

Water metering

We monitor the water usage of all cooling towers with meters, which record kilolitres at half hourly intervals. Both the fill point and the waste off the water treatment are monitored.
