Elder-in-Residence

Mr Gregory Egert, known to the community as Uncle Cheg, was QUT's inaugural Elder-in-Residence. Uncle Cheg is an Aboriginal man from Yugara, Gorenpul and Kabi Kabi country with considerable experience in the education sector and strong engagement with several Indigenous Australian community organisations.

Uncle Cheg was engaged as Elder-in-Residence from September 2019 to June 2023. During this time, he delivered a number of significant Welcomes to Country and also participated in selected committees, school engagement and cultural mentoring. Uncle Cheg provided an important link to the countries upon which QUT resides and a knowledge base for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian students and staff at QUT.

Staff and students fondly remember Uncle Cheg's impact on the QUT community, the memories created and knowledge shared, and Uncle Cheg remains a strong advocate for higher education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland.

How the role was developed

The role was developed by a Working Group of key stakeholders from across the university, in partnership with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Australians) and Human Resources. It was also informed by National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Consortium (NATSIHEC) recommendations.

This initiative acknowledges the role and status of Elders within Indigenous Australian communities. It is also one of several key actions identified in the university's 2018-2021 Indigenous Australians Employment Strategy, to help create a culturally safe and inclusive working environment for Indigenous Australians.

Our community partners

We are working with and walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations to improve the life expectancy and social and economic development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people Australia-wide.

QUT is proud to support the Queensland Murri Carnival, a Deadly Choices initiative which brings the community together for a day of rugby league, connection, and the chance for school students to learn more about the opportunities available at university.
