1st July 2015

Are noisy classrooms a bad thing? Should schools change start times to improve results and behaviour? Can kids design a better learning space?

And how do you teach like a pirate?

QUT will host the 2015 National Summit on Student Engagement, Learning and Behaviour at QUT's Garden's Point campus on 8-9 July.

Australia's top educators will be joined by popular TEDx presenter and award-winning teacher David Burgess from the United States along with well-known author and former broadcaster Maxine McKew.

Maxine McKew is a Vice Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Melbourne and has written Class Act: Ending the Education Wars which discusses successes and challenges in Australian education.

WHO: Key speakers and presenters
WHAT: National Summit on Student Engagement, Learning & Behaviour
WHEN: July 8-9
WHERE: QUT, Gardens Point Campus, Garden Theatre, 2 George St, Brisbane 4000

QUT Associate Professor Linda Graham is a key organiser of the summit and will present her latest research during the two-day event.

She said ways to prevent and combat challenging classroom behaviour was a key theme.

"Learning and behavioural difficulties can become entrenched if they aren't picked up early," she said.

"But it isn't about 'more and better' behaviour management. There is so much more involved!"

She said the aim of the summit was to bring key factors and players together to showcase practices that work to provide teachers and principals with more options.

Preliminary findings from her ongoing research including articles titled: Lay off blaming new teachers for 'falling' standards' and The hit and miss of dealing with disruptive behaviour in schools published in EduResearch Matters are available to the media.

**Interviews with select speakers can be provided prior to presentations upon request.
