QUT secures key William Robinson painting in recent auction

27 March 2013

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has acquired a major painting by William Robinson at the Bonhams Auction of the Laverty Collection on Sunday 24 March, 2013.

The Blue Pools, Springbrook to Beechmont, 2000 is the most significant artwork purchased by QUT and augments the university's William Robinson Art Collection, the largest public collection of this renowned Australian landscape painter.

The collection is housed in the William Robinson Gallery, opened in August 2009 in Old Government House on QUT's Gardens Point Campus and comprises more than 145 of the artist's key works.

The Blue Pools, Springbrook to Beechmont depicts the mountainous landscape of the Gold Coast hinterland from Springbrook, taking in the view of the Numinbah Valley to Beechmont, and is described by the artist as among his most important works.

"For the viewer it is a revelation that unfolds on canvas as the eye makes the journey from the peaks of the distant mountains to the depths of the forest," William Robinson said.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Peter Coaldrake said QUT was thrilled to acquire such an important work by the artist.

"This acquisition acknowledges that the William Robinson Gallery and Art Collection is an asset of national and international significance," Professor Coaldrake said.

QUT Art Museum senior curator Vanessa Van Ooyen said The Blue Pools was an exceptional example of Robinson's unique multi-dimensional perspective that has been his greatest stylistic development.

"Robinson's ability to transform the canvas into a space that is both deeply personal and, at the same time, universal, is one of his greatest revelations and a legacy that has made an invaluable contribution to the Australian landscape tradition," she said.

"It is a key work and we are absolutely excited to acquire it for the William Robinson Gallery and Art Collection."
