Helen Morse gives a powerhouse performance
Helen Morse delivers a powerhouse performance in Sundowner, a deeply
moving and critically acclaimed story that celebrates the love that binds
families together, playing 16-17 April at Gardens Theatre.
Sundowner tells the story of so many Australian families, exploring the fear, humour and dignity of those living with younger onset dementia through the eyes of three generations.
Helen Morse (Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Eye of the Storm, A Town Like
Alice) gives a stellar performance, taking the audience through an incredible journey and tackling the heavy subject of Alzheimer's with joy, humour and sensitivity. Sundowner sends the message that it's not the end - it's part of life.
Developed by production company KAGE with the assistance of Alzheimer's Australia, the work grew out of two years of research, drawing from the stories and experiences of families and carers of people with Alzhemier's.
A creative partnership of Kate Denborough and Gerard Van Dyck, KAGE is well-known for creating genre-defying and visually stunning work that is provocative, humorous and human.
In Sundowner, KAGE continues to successfully cross boundaries of theatre and dance. The dance sequences are seamlessly integrated, communicating what cannot be spoken, while the Tivoli Lovelies - original dancers from the Tivoli Theatre - bring warmth, tenderness and an affirmation of life and all its cycles.
The subject of a highly-regarded ABC Artscape documentary in 2011, Sundowner has attracted artists of the highest caliber, including original music by Paul Kelly, Megan Washington and Kelly Ryall.
