Caboolture orientation party starts uni year
QUT's Caboolture campus will start the 2013 university year with a record number of students - and a party to celebrate.
The "Welcome to Uni Party" will be held on Monday, February 18, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, for almost 400 new students.
The free event will take over the sports court at QUT's Caboolture campus in Tallon Street.
Head of campus Robert Craig said the Caboolture region had strongly embraced QUT since the university first started courses in King Street in 2002, before moving to the larger Tallon Street campus in 2005.
"This year we will welcome about 380 new students, which will bring our campus total to a record 730 students," he said.
The Welcome to Uni Party will give students a chance to mingle, socialise and enjoy the free food, live music, cash bar, games and prize giveaways.
This year students will also be able to enjoy a new addition on campus - a brand new $4.3 million library, which has been designed as the learning and social hub of the campus.
QUT Caboolture library manager Nicole Healy said students would benefit from more individual study spaces, technology-equipped group areas and more computers.
She said the interior design has been themed around the meaning of the word Caboolture ("Kabi" - place of the carpet snake) as well as flora and fauna from the local area.
"We're excited to have a fantastic purpose-built space for our students to use," she said.
QUT's Caboolture campus offers teaching, nursing, business and creative industries degrees.
The university also has campuses at Kelvin Grove and at Gardens Point in the Brisbane CBD. Combined, the three locations will welcome 11,000 new students when the first semester of 2013 officially starts on February 25 after Orientation Week (February 18-22).
