Wayne Blair, whose film The Sapphires is currently screening internationally, is one of a swag of QUT acting graduates who are forging outstanding careers.
Opportunity knocks for aspiring actors from multicultural Melbourne
Calling Victorian would-be actors! This could be your chance to enter one of Australia's premier acting schools.
Queensland University of Technology (QUT), based in Brisbane, will hold auditions in Melbourne for entry into its three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) in November 2012.
Head of QUT's Acting Studios Dianne Eden said QUT's policy of keeping class sizes small and making entry very competitive had paid off for both the university and students alike.
"We currently have five graduate students working in Hollywood, graduate Wayne Blair's film The Sapphires which stars another QUT graduate, Deborah Mailman, was received with acclaim in Cannes and is being screened internationally," she said.
"As well, two former students Gyton Grantley and Anna McGahan (who won the Heath Ledger Scholarship to help her pursue her career in Los Angeles) will this month appear in the Australian television series House Husbands.
"Both Gyton and Anna made names for themselves in the television series Underbelly."
Ms Eden said those currently working on the big or small screen in the USA are:
•Michael Dorman, appears in the new Robert De Niro film Killer Elite
•Paul Hodge, TV's CSI and the feature film From the Rough
•Ryan Johnson, appearing in the second series of Fairly Legal
•Celia Massingham, starring in CW Network's new USA TV pilot The Selection
•Brenton Thwaites, starring in the new Blue Lagoon feature film and will play the Prince in the Disney film Malificient.
Ms Eden said she was determined her 2013 intake of young actors would reflect the multi cultural country Australia now is.
Ms Eden said those successful in making it into the 2013 QUT acting degree could expect intensive training in acting for film, television and stage.
She said prospective students were urged to register online before 12 October at http://is.gd/Wlnh8L
Auditions will be held on Saturday November 17 at The Shell Room, the Malthouse Theatre, Southbank, Melbourne.
Ms Eden said students who were unable to attend audition could submit a video or DVD of their work which was to include two monologues.
