Engineers keen to find solutions to one of society's big engineering problems, increasing energy efficiency, are being encouraged to enrol in a new postgraduate course being offered at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Executive Dean of Science and Engineering Martin Betts said the Sustainable Energy specialisation within the new Master of Engineering offered professional engineers the chance to find solutions to help society transition to a low-carbon energy system.

"The low-carbon energy system of the future will need to incorporate renewable energy, smarter use of power grids and dramatically increase energy efficiency in our homes, buildings and industry," Professor Betts said.

"If you're up for the challenge, we want to hear from you."

Professor Betts said QUT was a leading Australian university in the field of energy systems and its new Microgrid Facility provided a platform for collaboration between researchers and industry in their pursuit of new energy efficient solutions.

He said engineers would also be challenged to develop the resources sector and deliver infrastructure in ways that advanced the frontiers of science and technology.

QUT's Master of Engineering course offered specialisations in four areas: electrical, mechanical, sustainable energy and transport, as well as the opportunity for professionals to develop their own study plan by drawing on units from across all four areas.

Electrical engineers would apply new sensor technologies to monitor the environment and would also focus on automation; mechanical engineers would develop the capacity of the resource sector to realise its potential; transport engineers would apply new intelligent transport systems to manage congestion and improve road safety; and sustainable energy engineers would develop advanced renewable energy technologies.

The one year full-time or two year part-time course is open in July for the Semester Two intake.

The Master of Engineering is just one of the many QUT postgraduate courses offered in Semester Two.

Other postgraduate course offerings include:
Science and mathematics
Engineering systems
Education
Urban Development
Information Technology
Master of Engineering (Railway Infrastructure)
Creative Industries - including Creative Production and Arts Management, and Urban Design
Business - including graduate certificate and diploma courses which are available online as well as on campus and the Master of Business and MBA programs
Law - including a new postgraduate course in Applied Law designed to enable non-law professionals to handle legal issues confidently within a range of disciplines including health, engineering and project management, and creative industries
Health - including postgraduate courses in biotechnology, health management, nursing, OH&S, psychology and research.
