Deneill Zaplin has changed careers from flight attendant to teacher-in-training.
Career change a smart move for trainee teacher
Deciding to enter the university world was daunting for single mother-of-two Deneill Zaplin.
The former flight attendant used a difficult time in her life as motivation to apply for a Bachelor of Education at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Ms Zaplin, 32, is a year closer to her goal of becoming a qualified primary teacher through study at QUT's Caboolture campus.
"It has been really challenging but it's fantastic to be at university. I love it," she said.
"I have a lot to juggle but in some ways study is easier because I have more life experience behind me. I have dedicated four years of my life to this so I'm going to do it well."
Mature age students interested in starting a new career are urged to attend the free Adult Tertiary Entry Expo on September 3 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The expo, which will bring together 20 universities, colleges and support organisations, caters for adults considering tertiary study at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
QUT staff will be on-hand to provide prospective students with information about career pathways, degree programs and courses, entry requirements, application processes and scholarships.
Ms Zaplin said a Learning Potential Fund scholarship she received from QUT helped her manage expenses.
"The scholarship has allowed me to work towards an independent future where I can financially support myself and my children," she said.
"I value my scholarship, I am committed to my degree and with my current GPA of 6.5, this proves how hard I have worked."
Ms Zaplin said she took the degree day by day and focused on maintaining balance in her life, as well as making time for her children, aged seven and eight.
"When I think about a four-year course, it feels like an eternity, but if I think semester by semester, the 13 week blocks are easier to concentrate on," she said.
"It is quite a demanding schedule being a full-time student, single mother and part-time worker. Although it's a fast-paced life, it's fun and exciting.
"I always tell people that if I can do it, they can do it too."
