Scholarships, bursaries and prizes

It's with the generosity of corporations, government, individuals and alumni that we currently offer around three hundred scholarships, bursaries, endowments and prizes. You can customise a scholarship or prize to meet your organisation's requirements, a personal area of interest or an important cause.

It allowed me to purchase text books and food and focus more on my study. Best of all, it gave me time to devote more hours to not-for-profit work. I am passionate about helping young people as I can relate to issues and challenges facing them. Thank you to those donors who recognise the importance of the Learning Potential Fund...

Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships normally cover student contribution fees for the length of the degree (three to five years). They can be of any length and awarded to students in any year of study.

We suggest a minimum scholarship value of $6000 to $10,000 per year, depending on the student contribution fees of the specific discipline.

Postgraduate scholarships can help support a student to undertake a one-year Masters course in a particular field of study, or assist them to undertake a PhD.

Scholarships can also be established to help students undertake studies abroad, or to conduct fieldwork as part of their course or research requirements.

Bursaries

A bursary is a study stipend awarded for academic achievement or other agreed selection criteria.

An example of one of our priority causes is the Remote Practicum Bursary Fund, which helps our student teachers take field experience in remote Queensland.

Prizes

Prizes recognise and reward excellence and usually come in the form of:

  • a cheque
  • a book voucher
  • equipment
  • a subscription to a professional organisation.

We select recipients based on an agreed selection criteria.

We suggest a minimum prize value of $500 for undergraduate students.

Bequests

When you remember QUT in your will, you are supporting education, research and community engagement for generations to come.

There are many reasons for bequeathing a gift, large or small. It's a very personal decision and something to be carefully considered.

The Mary and Carl Leonard International Relations Award

Mary and Carl Leonard decided to leave a bequest to QUT, so that the students could carry on their legacy.
They also chose to make initial donations to support scholarships during their lifetime. Mary and Carl set up the award for students who show leadership qualities in the areas of international relations and world peace to enable them to study or work overseas. Ultimately, the Leonard's gift will benefit the global community as well as QUT students.

Leave a bequest

We'll work with you to tailor your gift to your passions or interests. Bequests, whatever the size, are precious to us. We understand that your legacy must honour and reflect your values.

Endowment funds

Endowment funds provide an ongoing source of funding, as the capital base is invested in perpetuity and the investment or interest earnings provide annual program/scholarship funding. As a guide, a donation of $100,000 provides an ongoing annual scholarship of $2000. We currently administer 23 endowment funds on behalf of donors, with total funds in excess of $27 million. Our endowment funds include:

  • QUT Endowment Fund
  • Law Founders Scholarship Endowment.

In-kinds

People often make generous contributions to the university through non-cash gifts, including:

  • property
  • equipment
  • assets and investments
  • art.

The Shane and Sally Thompson Art Bequest

Family ties with QUT inspired Shane and Sally Thompson to remember QUT in their will. Art is a passion for the Thompsons and one which they hope will last forever with the university's help.

Their extensive collection - which includes works by Jon Molvig, Tony Tuckson and Robert Klippel - is destined for QUT where it will be enjoyed by future generations, following the Brisbane couple's decision to bequeath 150 artworks worth an estimated $1 million.

Make a non-monetary gift or in-kind to QUT

Non-monetary gifts come in many forms and come under different ATO guidelines. We accept gifts on a case-by-case basis.
