QUT Melbourne Alumni Chapter Event

The QUT Melbourne Alumni Chapter invites you to an evening in the Historic Old Treasury Building with inspirational guest speaker, Don Fry AO.

The engaging Don will share his 'Boyhood Dreams made real' from his early career to his current roles in engineering and extensive charity work.

There will be an opportunity before and after the presentation to connect with your fellow alumni, guest speaker and QUT staff.

Guest Speaker: Don Fry AO

Don is the recipient of Engineers Australia's highest National Awards.

In 2004 he was inducted into the QUT Hall of Fame when he was received the Distinguished Constructor Award and inaugural inductee into the Engineers Australia (Qld Division) Engineering Hall of Fame.

Don was apprenticed as a fitter and turner while completing his Diploma in Mechanical & Electrical Engineering between 1955-1960. He then took over and expanded his father's Cairns based business of NQEA to become a leading supplier of sugar mill machinery, mining equipment and a leading shipbuilding company.

During Don's time the company built 230 Ships including 50 for the Royal Australian Navy during the period 1966-2005.

Don has long committed his time to community projects including as Chair of the National Committee advising the Federal Government on Homelessness during the Howard Government term, he has been Chair of the Queensland Marine Board and Chair of the Salvation Army Advisory Board over a 40 year period culminating in being recognised through their Order of Distinguished Auxiliary Service Award in 2012.

Don moved to Melbourne in 2006 to enjoy the arts and now spends time developing advanced medical devices to improve orthopaedic and spinal surgical procedures.

Since establishing in Melbourne, Don and his wife, Susan, have become patrons of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and Opera Australia
