Reece:
Our centre for crime and justice research is a world leader. We are doing impactful, insightful, international research that touches on issues of local, national and international concern.

Belinda:
The centre is home to four key areas of research strength: Social, criminal and Indigenous justice; Policing, security and intelligence; Sexuality and gender research; and Eco-justice, corporate crime, and official corruption.

Reece:
Conducting impactful research requires good collaborations with international experts, and we have that. We have networks of the best people in certain disciplines. For example, in terrorism, international security we are making a true difference.

Belinda:
Another key area of research strength in the centre is around areas of violence and women. Now they are the typical areas where women are victims of violence, but they’re also the areas where women might perpetrate violence. In this context we’re looking at women who kill, we’re looking at women who are victims of violence in mining communities, we’re looking at women who are victims of violence because of their sexuality. In all of these areas we’re doing internationally collaborative research with policy makers and legislators around the globe.

Reece:
We focus on crimes of the powerful: police, political corruption, organised crime, as well as acts involving states and corporations compromising and manipulating our environment. Things that include crimes against air, against food, against water. These are the areas often overlooked in criminological examination.

Belinda:
And the final area of research in the centre is the relationship between marginalised groups and law enforcement. Here scholars look at the relationships between law enforcement officials, the court system,, prisons and the homeless, the mentally ill and Indigenous Australians.

Reece:
Rigorous, impactful and innovative research requires good collaborations, and we have excellent partnerships with industry with corporations, with local communities both here in Australia and abroad. We’re turning over all stones and seeing all possibilities, and creating new and innovative knowledges for a just world.
