KATE MCNAMARA: Hi I'm Kate, I'm a final year geology student at QUT here at Gardens Point. Having a first year which was such a broad over you know, you're doing biology, chemistry, geology, environmental science, you know it's such a wide range like if you're not 100% sure of what you want to do, like if you know you like science you know you can come here and have a good look at what's on offer and see, talk to lecturers, talk to older students and decide where you want to go from there.

Over the summer I got given a whole project to work on so you know I had a general outline of I know to find about this formation, and study its depositional environment and then work out whether it was worth the company investigating, whether it was something that a geologist should work on. I did a lot of work on computers, researching, mapping, so I drew little contours, and then a lot of presentations, analysing information.

We have a lot of industry nights where companies sponsor and present and you know mingle with students so you get business cards and hopefully you get a job. I know a few people who have got jobs from industry nights

In five years' time I would love to have been in a grad program, finished it and hopefully be working as a geologist overseas either in South East Asia, South America, maybe Houston you know big Texas oil fields, that would be pretty cool.
