JEROM FOX: Hi I’m Jerom and I’m a QUT Mechanical Engineering graduate. Mechanical engineers can deal with anything from pumps to air conditioning to air craft carriers or Boeing 747s.
One of the things I enjoyed most about the program is that they’ve got a real focus on interdisciplinary learning. We work with architects, interior designers, civil engineers and everyone across the engineering faculty and outside the faculty. The lecturers at QUT have a really good understanding of how to apply the theory in the real world. A lot of them have worked in industry for a number of years so when they are teaching in the classroom they have a really good understanding of what they are talking about. One of the highlights of my degree was completing exchanges in Germany and Canada. I had a great time and met a lot of new friends and it’s definitely something which looks good on your resume.QUT has a really good reputation with employers. The graduates are known to be practical and have a good understanding of both the theory and how to apply it in the real world.Currently I am a graduate mechanical engineer for BHP Biliton. I work out at Kennington Mine near Mt Isa in the reliability section. My job is to help the mine and the plant keep running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. I enjoy my job because I don’t have to sit behind a desk all day, I can get out in the plant work with the tradies and get things done.If you’re not sure what you want to get into do mechanical engineering; you can get into resources, manufacturing or power, basically the options are limitless.
