DEANNA HOOD: Hi, my name's Deanna, and I'm a Maths and Engineering graduate from QUT.

I knew at the end of high school that I really wanted to do a maths degree because I really enjoy the way that everything you learn in maths you kind of never knew existed before. So stuff with imaginary numbers, it gets more interesting and it blows your mind sometimes when you realize that all the stuff around us can be modelled and applied to maths.

I love maths because everything you learn you never knew existed before. So you might have an idea about different business structures that are around, but when somebody introduces you to a new way to factorise a matrix, or when you learn more things about imaginary numbers, for me, it's a really impressive moment because you learn about things which you really had never heard of before.

At QUT, maths students have the opportunity to spend the summer working with the lecturing staff, working on one of their research projects. It really gives you an idea of what real mathematicians do. I would recommend maths to people who might have enjoyed it in school and are keen to know what more might exist in the maths field because there’s a lot more to learn.
