I finished my honours in 2008 and I looked at working in the resources practices of regional business clusters and I was actually lucky enough to go to Germany to conduct my research. If you're interested in a topic and you're passionate about it and you like research and I think honours is a good program and it also gives you skills.

At the end of last year I finished my undergraduate degree in business and I decided to go on and do my honours in economics and finance. And I really wanted to experience some of the more research orientated degrees and get a bit of experience doing something that wasn't just pure course work.

My research is in social marketing which is applying commercial marketing principles to social and health issues rather than looking at it from a health promotion perspective.

I am doing my honours degree in accounting and I am the recipient of the Deans Honours Scholarship. So it's an accelerated program and it's two degrees in the time it takes to complete one. So I'm doing my undergraduate degree with my honours degree as well.

The structure of honours is you have 4 units you have to complete so it's research, methodology, seminar, and you can also do a special unit and then you also have your thesis on top of that so it's quite intensive but it's also very rewarding.

Because I really enjoyed all of the research projects I was doing as part of my undergraduate degree I decided to go on and do honours both to sort of round out my undergraduate degree and make it a little bit easier to get a job and also to get some experience doing research with some of the lecturers who are current researchers.

After I finished my honours I took up a position as a research assistant here at the School of Management. That was a sort of break before I hopefully start my PhD next year.

I'm interested in research in accounting. I know it sounds quite weird, research in accounting but there are so many different topics you can research and it's pretty interesting.

There is a small scholarship available to honours students which is really helpful throughout the year. You get that paid in a couple of instalments and most honours students also do tutoring work with the lecturers which is really helpful as well and it also assists in your learning by doing that.

So an honours degree I guess differentiates your resume from the rest and it's something that will, it puts you one step ahead of the rest when it comes to getting jobs.
