Hi, my name is Steven Timms, and I did a Bachelor of Exercise and Movement Science here at QUT. And I’m a sports scientist for Cricket Australia.
One of the great things about this degree is that you can chose from a number of areas to specialize in. From Performance Analysis, Sports Science, Research, Biomechanics or even Health and Wellness. I chose Sports Science and Research.
I did numerous pracs here at QUT. In my last year I did 100+ hours for Cricket Australia, I was full time, and it gave me my current job there. But I also had friends who worked at the mines, and in corporate settings here in Brisbane, as well different types of research here at QUT.
Generally my day at work is varied. I can be out in the field or I can be analysing data at a desk.
The biggest thrill of my job is watching unknown cricketers from around the country come into our program and then eventually going on to play for Australia – becoming household names.
The most exciting thing about my job is the opportunity to travel. Next week, I’m going to India for the world cup. It makes me feel pretty chuffed actually, knowing that I have some small part in making a household name or getting the ashes back, or winning a series. Or even just getting someone back on the park after an injury.
