Sample subject outline - Semester 2 2012
Note: Subject outlines often change before the semester begins. Below is a sample outline.
Rationale
This unit builds on the knowledge gained in BEB210 Introduction to Collaboration.
In a real environment designers need to collaborate with others using a range of design tools provided by different software vendors. In this unit you will develop an understanding of interoperability and methods of maximising the benefits of information exchange across a range of design tools.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide you with an understanding of the issues involved in multi-disciplinary collaboration building on the material covered in BEB210 Introduction to Collaboration. It will help you understand the flow of information between the members of design teams and recognise the interdependencies of information use within a design team.
Objectives
On completion of this unit you should be able to:
- Develop and critique 'open standard' collaboration methodologies;
- Identify and apply digital design tools that support 'open' standards relevant to a Model Server methodology and your specific disciplines in achievement of a specific design goal;
- Effectively use a Model Server to share digital design information in an 'open' ISO/IFC standard in achievement of a specific design goal.
Content
Building on the knowledge gained in BEB210 Introduction to Collaboration, you will use a range of design tools from different disciplines within a collaborative team environment. You will use a Model Server to coordinate shared digital design data across the design team. The focus will be on collaborative decision making processes and how these can support the development of designs that satisfy a diverse range of criteria.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Teaching Mode: Hours per week: 3
Studio/Tutorial: 3
This unit will be conducted in a project based environment (studio and tutorial). This will provide you with a mixture of generic skills and capabilities ensuring that you have a sound understanding of the tools used, combined with a problem based approach necessary to work in a simulated, workplace environment. The problem based work will be conducted as a group exercise.
Learning Approaches:
Learning approaches will cover the following:
- Problem based
- Collaborative learning
- Individual learning
- Presentation
Assessment
QUT's Assessment Policy is at MOPP c/5.1
Overview of Assessment:
Assessment will be based on three problem-based learning assignments.Feedback will be provided according to the QUT's Assessment Policy
Assessment name:
Report
Description:
You will work in groups to define a 'problem statement' and overall approach that will be used. You will prepare a problem statement and approach that corresponds to your role within the group problem.
Relates to objectives:

Due date:
Early - Mid Semester
Assessment name:
Reflective Journal
Description:
You will prepare a record of the process used in resolving the aspects of the design problem. This will provide a narrative of the approach used during design activity. Key points where information was shared with other members of the group will be highlighted and details of the exchanged information will be provided. This will be submitted as a series of PowerPoint slides. Physical media, such as paper and models will be incorporated through scanning or photographs.

Due date:
End Semester
Assessment name:
Presentation
Description:
Students will prepare a team presentation using relevant media (electronic and physical) to explain the solution developed by the group to the design problem. You will also explain how the problem statement evolved as the design solution space was explored.
