Experience in clinical departments is vital to developing clinical competence and this unit is designed to build on the experience gained in previous units to further develop students’ clinical and interpersonal skills. Continuing commitment to reflective practice will empower students to move towards autonomous learning. After completion of this unit students should be able to assist with the full range of clinical procedures and have clear ideas about how to organise their clinical learning in relation to their future personal and professional development.

Rationale

An opportunity to participate in patient treatment and planning procedures in the clinical environment, is essential to development of skills for radiation therapy students.

Aims

The periods of clinical experience in this unit will enable you to gain experience in routine radiotherapy techniques and procedures.

Objectives

1. Perform routine radiotherapy planning and treatment techniques and assist with specialised / advanced techniques.

2. Demonstrate professional behaviours

3.. Demonstrate interpersonal and communications skills required in clinical practice.

4. Demonstrate appropriate skills in patient care.

5 Critically reflect on the rationale and outcomes of the procedures you have participated in and report on this performance.

Content

· CT simulation - simulation of routine procedures.
· Dosimetry for routine techniques.
· Treatment of routine procedures.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Supervised clinical experience attachment over a period of 4 to 5 weeks in an approved clinical department on a full-time basis.

Assessment

In order to gain a grade 4-7 for this unit, you will be required to demonstrate a satisfactory level of achievement in each item of assessment and a mark of at least 60% overall.

Maintenance, verification and submission by the due date of the required records for this clinical placement with your Clinical Practice Guide folder.

Return of your personal radiation monitor and name badge by the due date.Ongoing feedback is provided to students throughout their clinical placement.

Description: A reflection and critical evaluation of the students experiences and learning throughout the clinical placement.

Assessment name: Workbook
Description: (Formative) - Submission of Clinical Practice Records of Clinical Experience. A record of rostered hours and examinations/procedures carried out as an assistant or supervised performer and verified by the supervisor must be submitted within one week of completion of the clinical period, along with the radiation badge. Failure to submit will result in an un-finalised result until submitted.

Risk assessment statement

The out of the ordinary risks associated with this unit relate to the operation of equipment in the clinical situation. You will receive instructions on safety issues and be provided with a radiation badge to assess radiation exposure during the placement. Infection control techniques and precautions should be observed to avoid exposure to harmful agents.
