In this unit you will extend, apply and deepen your understanding of these networks through developing and updating the Brisbane Media Map - an online resource that profiles media and communication industries in Brisbane. You will also refine your project planning and management skills, information analysis skills, and team leadership and membership skills.

Rationale

Networks of industry and professional association are extremely important in media and communication industries. In this unit you will extend, apply and deepen your understanding of these networks through developing and updating the Brisbane Media Map - an online resource that profiles media and communication industries in Brisbane. You will also refine your project planning and management skills, information analysis skills, and team leadership and membership skills.

Aims

Following successful completion of KCB303, this unit aims to deepen your working knowledge of media and communication by demonstrating how critical understandings of media communication are practically applied, providing an environment in which to develop your team leadership abilities, communication skills and project management capacities to professional levels of attainment while contributing at a high level to the development of an online information database.

Objectives

By the end of this unit you should be able to:
1. Apply existing disciplinary knowledge and professional skills to produce a valuable public resource;
2. Have a sopisticated understanding of effective professional, ethical, and socially-responsible communication conduct and practice;
3. Engage in critical, creative and analytical thinking and problem-solving; and display individual initiative, and co-operate in various forms of collaborative teamwork.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
- Approaches and techniques of defining, identifying and evaluating media and communication-related firms
- Ways in which information about media and communication organisations can be generated, recorded and mapped for analysis and future reference
- Current awareness of media and communications sub-sectors,and the issues affecting them including community media, entertainment media, media and communication services, print, broadcasting, audiovisual, new media, as well as relevant professional associations, consumer organisations and government agencies.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

This unit will be taught via a combination of lectures, seminars and computer laboratory sessions. The general research and communication skills, methods and strategies necessary to succeed in this unit will be addressed in the lecture program. Various fields of Brisbane-based media and communication activity will also be reviewed and critically evaluated by guest lecturers. The lecture program will be augmented with a seminar program in which you will present and lead discussion on work in progress on the major assignment, and laboratory-based tutorials where you will have `hands-on' instruction in the research and development of the Brisbane Media Map.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
An assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension will not be marked.
If you are unable to complete your assignment on time, you should submit on time whatever work you have done.
