Designed to give international students the computing ability to function in tertiary studies in Australia, this unit covers access to the QUT network, Microsoft Windows, email, Internet, word processing and presentation, and the use of technology for research.

Rationale
It is important when studying at university to have the computing skills necessary for accessing, organising and presenting information and knowledge of the university computing facilities, services, procedures and culture. As these skills are needed at the beginning of university study, this is an introductory subject encompassing Windows, Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint to provide students with these skills.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to provide students with the basic computing skills for successful completion of their university study.
Objectives
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of computer software. (UCGC 3)
2. Demonstrate online literacy, referencing and researching information on line. (UCGC 3)
3. Develop computing skills with associated knowledge, understanding, attitudes, decision-making and problem-solving skills. (UCGC 4)
4. Use the computer responsibly to gather, store, retrieve, use and communicate. (UCGC 5)
5. Use computer software and functions efficiently to improve your assignment preparation and presentation. (UCGC 1)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning
The unit consists of three hours per week which include a combination of individual and group activities. This unit will involve hands-on workshops and tutorial sessions.
In order to succeed in this subject, you are expected to attend all classes, to participate actively in class discussions, to complete all in class activities, homework and submit work by the due dates and to complete all set assessment tasks.
Students' participation in all sessions is mandatory.
Late Assignment Policy
Students will be penalised for the late submission of assignments. Refer to the University Certificate in Tertiary Preparation Course Guide for details.

Consultation
The teacher will be available for consultation from Week 2. Times will be advised in class, posted on Blackboard and will also be displayed in a schedule at Reception on Level 3.
Assessment
Types of assessment
In this unit you will be assessed through formative and summative assessment.
Formative assessment items are used to provide feedback to students to assist with their progress and do not count towards final marks. This assessment could be done in class.
Summative assessment items count towards the final grade for this subject.
There are three summative assessment items:
1. Oral Presentation
2. Written Report
3. Final Exam
This unit may require students to submit their assessment items through SafeAssign.
