This unit contributes to the ongoing development of academic capabilities, effective communication in a variety of contexts and modes and critical, creative and analytical thinking. The unit specifically develops skills in listening, reading, analysing, summarising and paraphrasing, spoken and written material from a range of sources.

Rationale

Academic English 2 is designed to provide international students with the necessary academic literacy skills to successfully transition to first year undergraduate studies. You will be introduced to a variety of spoken and written genres and language.

Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide opportunities for students to practise, develop and apply academic literacy skills in context.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify different academic genres and demonstrate an understanding of these. (FGC 1)

  2. Apply appropriate conventions, including language, in a variety of academic genres. (FGC 3)

  3. Use research skills, both primary and secondary, in order to identify, access, evaluate, organise and communicate information. (FGC 4)

  4. Demonstrate and reflect on learning in order to improve academic progress. (FGC 5)

    The unit consists of six hours contact per week which includes a combination of classes, consultation and lectures. All assessment items are scaffolded in class. Formative assessment is also used. You are encouraged to participate actively in all class activities which involve both individual and small group work to enhance the academic experience. The unit promotes the use of critical thinking and encourages independent learning which will assist the transition to degree programs.

    Late Assignment Policy

    Consultation
    The teacher will be available for consultation from Week 2.

    Exam Timetable
    The exam timetable will be displayed on the Noticeboard on Level 3 by Week 11.

    Assessment

    This unit includes formative and summative assessment.
    Formative assessment (FA) items are used to provide feedback to students to assist with their progress and do not count towards final marks. Formative assessment could be done in class. Summative assessment (SA) items count towards the final grade for this subject and include the following. For further details of assessment refer to the Week 1 Document.
