The use of computers is prevalent in Australia for every study area. The aim of the unit is for international students to develop computing skills to prepare for successful undergraduate studies in an Australian university.

Rationale

The use of computers is prevalent in Australian universities for every study area. International students need to develop computing skills such as word processing, presentations and spreadsheets in order to access, organise and present information both within QUT and in the wider learning environment.

Aims

This unit will provide students with the necessary computing skills for successful completion of undergraduate studies in an Australian university.

Objectives

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. Apply a critical and analytical approach to information gathering and solve problems relating to audio - visual presentations (FGC4)

2. Use a range of commercial software packages to retrieve, manipulate and present information required in a tertiary instutution (FGC3)

3. Further develop the capability to work independently (FGC5)

Week 1: Introduction to the Unit

  • Overview of computing at QUT

    Week 2: Microsoft Windows and Office fundamentals
  • Working with programs, files and folders

  • Zip and unzip functions

  • Introduction to Microsoft Office programs and their common features


  • Week 3: Microsoft PowerPoint
  • How to create and deliver professional and academic presentations using standard and advanced features of PowerPoint


  • Week 4: Online Literacy and Referencing
  • Introduction to the QUT Library

  • Electronic journals and databases

  • Using the Internet

  • Understanding and identifying academic websites

  • Formatting references using Word and QUT APA system


  • Weeks 5 to 9: Microsoft Word
  • Creating documents

  • Editing and formatting

  • Using cover pages

  • Tabs, borders and shading, columns

  • Tables, bullets, headings and styles

  • Enhancing a document

  • Formatting assignments

  • Structure, layout and formatting of reports

  • Adding references and appendices


  • Weeks 10 - 12: Microsoft Excel
  • Creating and formatting spreadsheets

    Approaches to Teaching and Learning

    This unit consists of 5 hours per week and will involve teaching sessions, hands-on workshops in computer laboratories and discussions. Outside scheduled class times, students will have access to tutors during consultation hours, by appointment and by email. Supplementary resources can be accessed via the subject Blackboard site.

    Late Assignment Policy
    Students will be penalised for the late submission of assignments. Refer to the Foundation Course Guide for details.

    Review of Grades or Academic Rulings
    For rules on how to apply for a review of grade, refer to the Foundation Course Guide.

    Consultation
    The teacher will be available for consultation from Week 2. Times will be advised in class and will also be displayed in a schedule at Reception.

    Exam Timetable
    The exam timetable will be displayed on the Noticeboard on Level 3 by Week 11.

    Assessment

    Types of Assessment
    In this unit, students will be assessed through formative and summative assessment.
    Formative assessment items are used to provide feedback to students to assist with their progress and do not count towards final result. This assessment may be done in class time.

    Summative assessment is any assessment item which is included in the calculation of your grade.

    This unit may require students to submit their assessment items through SafeAssign.
