The English for Academic Purposes course helps international students to upgrade their English proficiency level and to meet university entry requirements. This course is designed to prepare students for independent study and to familiarise them with an Australian academic setting in terms of study techniques and student/lecturer relations and expectations.

Rationale

this unit provides assistance to international students to upgrade your English proficiency level to meet university entry requirements for QUT Degree and Post-Graduate programs.

Aims

The aims of the EAP unit are to:

(a) assist you to upgrade your Engligh proficiency level in speaking, listening, reading and writing to meet university entry requirements.

(b) prepare you for independent study and to familiarise you with an Australian academic context.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this unit, you should be able to speak, listen, read and write in academic contexts.

In particular you should be able to:

  • Organise and deliver an oral presentation;
  • Research and write formal essays;
  • Listen and read in academic contexts.

Content

The unit consists of the following integrated modules:

  1. Academic reading and note taking;
  2. Academic writing;
  3. Listening and note taking from lectures;
  4. Speaking in an academic setting, including seminar presentations;
  5. Study Skills
  6. Assignment preparation and Internet research skills;
  7. Library research skills.

    Approaches to Teaching and Learning

    Proficiency is developed through the presentation and practice of relevant topics, genres, structures and vocabulary. Content knowledge and skills are developed in small classes through interactive, task based, student centred activities and simulated academic contexts.
