Rationale

The successful integration of artistic practice with audience and business development lies at the heart of career sustainability in the Creative Industries. This unit is the first of two music project units designed for students to develop an integrated approach to their creative practice through intensive, applied, and collaborative exploration of the techniques, materials, concepts and approaches that feed into the successful creation of commercially popular music. Projects are mentored in intensive mode by industry experts during the semester and supervised by academic supervisors in your discipline throughout the semester.

Aims

The unit aims to develop skills and techniques relevant to the project, to create conditions conducive for reflection on your existing practice, and to create innovative material designed with specific audiences and artist career trajectories in mind. Students will work in cohorts to develop new works in the context of management and audience development strategies.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should demonstrate:
1. Knowledge of the techniques, materials, resources, and concepts necessary to create and commercially exploit new music;
2. Cognitive, technical and creative skills to contribute to the creation of new musical works and evaluate those works at complex and sophisticated levels;
3. Knowledge and skills to apply your creativity and initiative to new situations in your professional practice.

Content

Specific project content is negotiated among cohorts guided by their academic and industry mentors. Content plans need to be approved by the course coordinator.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Project development will be largely self-directed. It will use the facilities of the University as appropriate, and as approved by the Course Coordinator and Head of Music. Regularly scheduled meetings with your academic and industry mentors will include the presentation of developing materials, review of associated documentation, and the refinement of short and medium term goals.

Assessment

LATE ASSIGNMENTS

Risk assessment statement

Musicians must be aware that exposure to loud music for extended periods may impair hearing over time. Wearing appropriate ear protection when such likelihood occurs can eliminate risk.
If you work with electronic devices you must ensure that such devices are correctly used and connected safely to power supplies. Risk can be minimised by the noting safety instructions from the lecturing and demonstrating staff and also by reading and understanding the manuals for any equipment used. When moving of musical equipment is required you should be mindful that some equipment can be heavy. Care must be taken when lifting these items and correct procedures should be used to avoid injury.
