Rationale

The ability to work collaboratively and to communicate effectively is essential for all Creative Industries professionals. In this unit students will have the opportunity to acquire and apply research, collaborative practices and project management skills through the collaborative development of a Creative Industries project proposal. This unit is a complement to KKD101 Creative Industries: People and Practices and examines the practical requirements of contributing to cultures and establishing connections with communities.

Aims

This unit aims to foster students skills as a collaborator and a communicator in the Creative Industries. Students will be introduced to theoretical aspects of community and cultural development as well as the practical, ethical and legal considerations involved in working with communities and potential project sponsors. The unit will support students to develop fundamental visual and oral communication skills for effective participation in students' studies and future professions within the creative industries.

Objectives

On completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Research, investigate and evaluate possibilities for creative industries projects that engage communities.
2. Apply creative problem solving skills, collaborative practices and basic project management skills in the development of a project proposal.
3. Apply written, visual and oral communication skills in the presentation of a collaborative project proposal.
4. Analyse and manage the processes and practices required for successful collaborative work.

Content

The unit addresses content such as:
- Theories, principles and practices of teamwork, collaboration and collaborative creativity
- Social, cultural and ethical dimensions of collaborative practices
- Community and project sponsor engagement with creative industries projects
- Practical requirements of project planning
- Introductory project management skills
- Approaches to structuring and presenting information
- Introductory visual communication skills

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Lectures:

Lectures are used to provide a basic understanding of the practical and theoretical issues. For lecture weeks 1-12 Lecture Outlines are available in two Workbooks. You will only derive the most out of lectures if you bring the Workbooks with you. While there is no opportunity for lengthy interaction between lecturer and students during lectures, students in the past have found great value in attending lectures and workshops because they were able to see problems being worked, rather than just being handed the answers, with no demonstration or explanation.

Tutorials:

Tutorials commence in week 2 (covering the previous week's work).

The basic understanding provided in lectures and workshops will be developed through the use of tutorials. To achieve the objectives of the unit it is essential that you complete the assigned tutorial work prior to attendance at the tutorial in the following week.
On a weekly basis, tutorial work is based on lecture material and requires you to work through a series of questions and problems.

Tutors will work through selected questions from the set tutorial work and deal with any problems arising from that material.

In preparation for the tutorial you are required to have completed all the weekly tutorial work, including the practical questions prior to attendance at these tutorials. The practical tutorial questions are designed to further reinforce the work covered in the lecture and the workshop, to show how various issues in the lecture material fit together, and to give students the opportunity to see "how" problems are worked, and discuss with tutors "why" something is done a certain way. Attendance at tutorials is essential to your success in this unit.

Proper attention to the teaching and learning strategies should enable students to meet the assessment requirements of the unit. You will be assessed on your developing knowledge, understanding and skills using a range of inter-related assessment methods.
