This unit develops personal, interpersonal and team skills that distinguish outstanding human resource, management and other professionals. Recent literature has identified the need for professionals to acquire knowledge in the areas of self management and the management of others to contribute to organisational performance. To achieve this, Personal and Professional Development is positioned at the conclusion of the course to build upon concepts learned in introductory and intermediate units with a strong focus on the application of theory to practice.

Rationale

To be a successful HR professional requires more than content knowledge and technical skill. This unit provides final year HR graduates with the opportunity to refine and build skills essential to building a successful career and operating effectively within an organisation. Using the six key competencies identified by the Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI) this unit gives students the opportunity to identify and develop the key inter- and intra- personal skills and attributes of a contemporary, strategically aligned HRM professional.

Aims

This unit aims to develop several key competencies essential to be a successful HR professional as reflected in the six key competencies identified by our professional body the Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI). Adopting a dual phase approach you will develop the ability to evaluate and develop your own personal and professional development plan as well as learn how to develop a professional development plan for others around you.

Objectives

Course Learning Goals (Undergraduate)
The QUT Business School has established the Assurance of Learning (AOL) Goals to meet contemporary industry needs and standards. Unit Objectives
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate enhanced self-awareness which in turn, enables you to appreciate others' individual differences in the management of people.
2. Apply and interpret tools to evaluate skills development in the context of human resource management.
3. Develop and apply an action plan for your personal development using appropriate theory and incorporating models of behaviour change and reinforcement.
4. Demonstrate the ability to develop and apply a professional development plan for another individual.
5. Understand the link between professional and personal development and its relationship to being a contributing member to the HR profession.

    The teaching and learning strategies in this unit are a combination of workshops and action learning. The unit is skills based, which means it is action and reflection oriented and draws heavily on Kolb's learning cycle. The content of the unit has been developed so you move from intrapersonal skills to interpersonal and then group level skills, progressing from week 1 through to week 13. An explicit goal of the unit is that you have the opportunity to practice the skills as well as develop a sound understanding of the conceptual and theoretical background.

    This unit uses the SafeAssign tool in BlackBoard. SafeAssign is a text matching tool that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as to check citations and determine possible instances of plagiarism. You will be expected to submit draft and/or final versions of one or more assignments using SafeAssign. Your Unit Coordinator will provide detailed information on how the software will be used in this unit.

    Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation

  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary

  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

  • Indirect: to the whole class
  • Assessment name: Personal Development Plan
    Description: Individual Personal Development Plan. Develop a professional portfolio. Conduct an evaluation of your personal skills, reflecting on the impact of those as they relate to you as an HR professional. Develop a digital CV to reflect those skills and competencies.

    Description: Peer Professional Development Plan. Work with a colleague to evaluate their professional development needs; and develop an action plan to guide the achievement of those goals identified as part of your consultation process.
