Rationale

It is important for Science students to have opportunities to integrate their university studies with experience of professional practice. Furthermore Work Integrated Learning experiences can increase graduate employability through the development of key competencies and building professional networks in the industry.

Aims

This unit aims to provide you with the opportunity to apply, practise and extend knowledge and skills developed in your studies through a supervised work placement.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. apply your discipline knowledge and complex reasoning skills in a workplace context;
2. demonstrate your capacity to work independently and collaboratively;
3. demonstrate responsible and ethical conduct in an organisation;
4. reflect on your developing professional capabilities and skills, and on areas for improvement in your practice;
5. synthesise and communicate through oral presentation current research related to an area of professional practice.

Content

The preparation for your work placement will include the following topics: Health and Safety in the workplace context, ethical practice, for example when dealing with patient cases and reporting their histories in a non-identifiable way, skills of reflective practice and report writing. Other content in this unit will be specific to your work placement.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

In this unit, the following approaches are employed to support your learning.

Work placement preparation: You will be required to undertake work placement preparation through QUT prior to commencing your placement. Online resources will be available through Blackboard to assist you in your preparation for placement. This includes the mandatory completion of the 'Understanding Workplace Resilience' online module through the QUT Career Development Programs. You should also receive a workplace induction at the start of your placement.

Through the placement you will liaise with your academic and industry supervisor to support your learning. You should contact the unit coordinator if any concerns arise during placement.

You will have the opportunities to reflect on your developing professional practice on placement through an online journal. Your academic supervisor will give you feedback on your journal entries.

Assessment

Components of your assessment include a professional plan; an interview; and employer evaluation. You are required to pass in all assessment items to achieve a satisfactory grade for the unit.You will be provided with feedback during your placement, from your industry supervisor and the unit coordinator. Your academic supervisor will provide feedback on your journal entries. At the completion of the assessment components you will be provided feedback on your performance. If unsatisfactory you will be asked to come for a meeting to discuss your performance.

Assessment name: Proposal & Reflective Journal
Description: There are 2 aspects to this assessment component. You will be first writing a placement proposal. This will include details of work placement and background to organisation; aim and objectives of the placement, and how it relates to your career aspirations; details of any H&S requirements (e.g. Hepatitis B vaccination); you will need to have this endorsed by your proposed industry supervisor and placement details approved by your academic supervisor.
Part 2 is composed of your journal entries (a minimum of 5) of your experiences, entering descriptions of your achievements, observations and reflective comments.
Due dates - Placement proposal: Early Semester
Journals: Will be checked at intervals during semester; should be finalised one week after the last day of your placement.

Assessment name: Knowing the Industry
Description: You are required to interview a number of industry professionals to seek a deeper understanding of the workplace and provide a brief literature review on a topic to be negotiated with industry and academic supervisor and linked to your workplace experience. This will be presented as an oral presentation to a group of QUT academics, industry professionals and Biomedical Science undergraduate students. You will be assessed on both the content of your presentation, the delivery of your presentation and the technology used for your presentation (eg. PowerPoint). A maximum of 20 mins will be allowed with and additional 10 minutes for questions from the audience.
Due Date: To be negotiated (approximately 2 weeks following conclusion of placement).

Assessment name: Placement Performance
Description: You will apply learning and demonstration of professional capabilities through your work placement: this will include (but is not limited to) application of your discipline knowledge and skills; demonstrate your capacity to work independently and collaboratively; demonstration of responsible and ethical conduct including being punctual, reliable, sensitive to patients and clients needs where applicable. The assessor will be your workplace supervisor. This assessment is Pass/Fail.

Risk assessment statement

You are required to abide by the occupational health and safety regulations of the workplace you are joining in addition to those set down by QUT, for which you can access details at the university's health and safety website:

You will be inducted into the occupational health and safety practices of the workplace to which you are attached at the start of your placement. If your placement is in a hospital or similar environment you will need Hepatitis B vaccination and to be able to provide documentary evidence of your Hepatitis B immune status. It is a requirement that you successfully complete the induction component as described in the contents for this unit.

If you have any underlying health conditions, you are encouraged to consult the unit coordinator so that additional precautions can be taken if necessary.
