Networks of industry and professional association are extremely important in media and communication industries. In this unit students will extend and apply their critical knowledge of media and communication to the task of deepening their understanding of these networks. Through developing and updating the Hong Kong Media Map—an online resource that profiles media and communication industries in Hong
Kong—students will also refine their project planning and management skills, information analysis skills,
and team leadership and membership skills. Students will also explore ethical, communication, and
intellectual property concerns that arise in the processes of undertaking a real-world media and communication industries project.

Rationale
Networks of industry and professional association are extremely important in media and communication industries. In this unit you will extend and apply your critical knowledge of media and communication to the task of deepening your understanding of these networks. Through developing and updating the Hong Kong Media Map-an online resource that profiles media and communication industries in Hong Kong-you will also refine your project planning and management skills, information analysis skills, and team leadership and membership skills. You will also explore ethical, communication, and intellectual property concerns that arise in the processes of undertaking a real-world media and communication industries project.
Aims
This unit aims to deepen your working knowledge of media and communication by: demonstrating how critical understandings of media communication are practically applied; providing an environment in which to develop your team leadership abilities, communication skills and project management capacities to professional levels of attainment; and contributing to the maintenance and development of an online information database.
Objectives
By the end of this unit you should be able to:
1. Explain the significance of specific media and communication firms and activities in the wider context of the Hong Kong economy;
2. Have an applied understanding of effective ethical, cross-cultural and equitable professional communication conduct and practice;
3. Analyse the value of formal and informal professional associations, networks and resources relevant to maintaining a current, applied knowledge of developments in media and communications;
4. Engage in critical, creative and analytical thinking and problem-solving; and display individual initiative, and co-operate in various forms of collaborative teamwork.
Content
This unit addresses content such as:
- Approaches and techniques of defining, identifying and evaluating media and communication-related firms
- Ways in which information about media and communication organisations can be generated, recorded and mapped for analysis and future reference
- Current awareness of media and communications sub-sectors,and the issues affecting them including community media, entertainment media, media and communication services, print, broadcasting, audiovisual, new media, as well as relevant professional associations, consumer organisations and government agencies.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
This unit will be taught via a combination of lectures, seminars and computer laboratory sessions. The general research and communication skills, methods and strategies necessary to succeeding in this unit will be addressed in the lecture program. Various fields of Hong Kong-based media and communication activity will also be reviewed and critically evaluated by guest lecturers. The lecture program will be augmented with a seminar program in which you will present and lead discussion on work in progress on the major assignment, and laboratory-based tutorials where you will have 'hands-on' instruction in the research and development of the Hong Kong Media Map.

For this assessment item, you must evaluate the current live version of the Brisbane Media Map (http://bmm.qut.edu.au/) and identify ways in which you might contribute to redeveloping the website for a Hong Kong version. Your evaluation can come from a range of perspectives-industry, student, job-seeker-and can address a series of different aspects of the site, including analysing individual records, proposing new records, discussing commentaries, or by suggesting potential extensions to the database or major structural changes.

Final Report
Description:
(Summative)
For your final assignment you will write a 3000 word report which discusses and analyses the purpose and nature of your contributions to the Hong Kong Media Map (HKMM). Your Report will contain hard copies of all HKMM content for which you were responsible for, a copy of your media issues commentary, and copies of any other significant material you may have produced as part of the HKMM project. It will also contain copies of the team contract, minutes and evaluations.
