The number of individuals in contemporary societies who use new media technologies to shape, (re)form and sustain their identities is on the rise. From social networking sites like FaceBook and blogs to YouTube, this unit takes you through the critical enquiry of your use of new media in five aspects of everyday life: entertainment, socialisation, information, education and business, health and well-being, and beliefs and politics. This unit also introduces them to theories, issues and deliberations surrounding new media.

Rationale

The number of individuals in contemporary societies who use new media technologies to shape, (re)form and sustain their identities is on the rise. From social networking sites like FaceBook and blogs to YouTube, this unit takes you through the critical enquiry of your use of new media in five aspects of everyday life: entertainment, socialisation, information, education and business, health and well-being, and beliefs and politics. This unit also introduces them to theories, issues and deliberations surrounding new media.

Aims

This unit aims to introduce you to contemporary theories, thinking and debates surrounding new media with special reference to everyday life. You will explore how and why the individual use of new media inflect, shape, order and feed into the (re)formation and performance of identities within multiple, overlapping networks of work, education, play, beliefs and socialisation.

Objectives

On completion of this unit you should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate the role new media play in daily life;
2. Deconstruct the concepts, thinking and debates that exist around new media, and apply them to the consideration of how and why the personal use of new media inflect, shape, order and feed into the construction(s) of selves and relationships;
3. Critique the key issues surrounding the personal application of new media;
4. Communicate this understanding of new media in a variety of modes (written, oral and visual).

Content

The unit addresses content such as:
- the use of new media and the performance of self in relation to others
- the consumption, production and practice of new media
- socio-cultural imaginings and technological convergence in new media
- working with and in new media

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Key concepts will be introduced and discussed in formal lectures. These will be built on further with discussions, student presentations and activities at the tutorials. These will also be directed at supporting student work-in-progress on assessment tasks.

Assessment name: In-Class Group Presentation
Description: (Formative and summative)
Part A (Weighting 30%)
You will work in groups to prepare a 10-minute (+/- 10%) presentation on one of the topics of the unit. Both the constitution of your group and the time of your presentation will be agreed upon between you and your lecturer. Your presentation should demonstrate significant effort at group work and should contain at least 2 key questions to address to the class and generate further discussion. The discussion following on from your questions is not included within the time limit.

Part B (Weighting 20%)
You will then prepare a combined commentary of 1,000 words as a follow-up to the presentation. Only one commentary is required per group. Your commentary will critically elaborate on the ideas represented in your presentation. It should also respond to feedback from those present at the presentation. You may draw on relevant unit readings and lectures to support the points made in your presentation. DO NOT DESCRIBE YOUR PRESENTATION.

Assessment name: Blog

You will compose and post a blog on the readings for each week, which reflects your understanding of the material and their relation to the intersections between new media, the self and the broader world. Each of your entries should be no more than 300 words (+/- 10%).
