The thesis provides students with an opportunity to formally extend and synthesise knowledge gained in earlier semesters of the course. The study represents an independent piece of research completed under the guidance of a supervisor. The thesis may be a study on research which makes a contribution to the body of knowledge in the student's discipline area or professional area, or a study in which the student critically analyses and evaluates existing knowledge and produces observations and conclusions of relevance to the field concerned. Part-time students complete NSN825-1 and NSN825-2. Full-time students conplete NSN850. The final thesis is approximately 15,000 to 20,000 words.

Rationale

Objectives

At the conclusion of this unit students will have written a thesis which will:


  1. Synthesise information into a unified and coherent whole;


  2. Use relevant research methodology to investigate their defined area of research;


  3. Critically analyse their work in an objective and reflective manner;


  4. Draw conclusions from the study and make recommendations for future research in the area; and


  5. Write in accordance with accepted standards of scholarship, documentation, style and presentation.

Content

Preparation and submission of the thesis.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

Students should meet regularly with supervisors and present regular drafts by mutual arrangement to the supervisor.

Assessment

Feedback will be spaced throughout the unit via regular meetings with supervisors.
