This unit is the vehicle for you to undertake a structured, individual research project under supervision. The course requires that you are capable of using your initiative to manage a major research project to satisfy completion. The project is to be a substantial piece of work relevant to the course carried out on an individual basis, investigating and analysing the legal aspects of a real world intellectual property problem.

Rationale

This unit espouses competent research, written and analytical skills underpinned by strong practical knowledge of IP law; and
the ability to apply the relevant IP law, policy and principles in diverse national and international contexts. The Research Project will facilitate


  • Independent research and critical analysis of contemporary issues;

  • conduct of further research;

  • suggesting improvements; and

  • communication of expert IP knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences,thus interacting with leading IP professionals, acquiring leadership and website skills and honing your research and writing abilities.

Aims

The aim of the research project is to expose you to a real world problem related to your profession and to develop your skills in research, critical analysis and application of intellectual property law in your professional practice.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, you should be able to demonstrate:
(i) advanced theoretical knowledge and analytical skills in the area of intellectual property law
(ii) methodological, research design and problem-solving skills in the area of intellectual property law;
(iii) independence in research planning and execution, consistent with the level of the research degree
(iv) skills in project management, teamwork, academic writing and oral communication

Content

A diversity of topics may be selected that relate to real-world intellectual property law concepts. You must consult with the unit coordinator to discuss a topic and obtain advice on presentation.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning

You will develop a topic in collaboration with a supervisor with whom you will liaise closely to receive guidance and feedback on progress. All research papers submitted must be between 8,000 and 10,000 words, excluding bibliography

Assessment

Assessment in this unit involves a research project synopsis and final research paper.You are required to have regular contact with your supervisor and oral and written feedback will be provided during discussions and email exchanges.

Assessment name: Research Paper
Description: The research paper, of 8,000 to 10,000 words forms 80% of the summative assessment for this unit.
Your research paper should comply with the rules for the presentation of research papers and projects in the section on "Guidelines for Presentation of Research Papers and Research Projects" in the Postgraduate Student Information Booklet (available electronically from 'Publications' found under 'Study' on the Faculty of Law homepage) and will be assessed in compliance with Section 10.2.
