Rationale
As clinical nursing practice develops and the range of specialty areas widens it is important to provide opportunities to explore areas of interest. This unit will provide students with the opportunity to develop clinical knowledge and understanding in a selected area of paediatric or child and youth health. Through the completion of the learning contract and the clinical portfolio students will develop knowledge and skills in an area of choice. These clinical activities build on theoretical and clinical learning in the area of acute paediatrics or community child health and provide the student with the opportunity to demonstrate competence, based on standards established by the Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses.
Aims
The aim of this unit is to enable you to explore in depth an area of clinical interest in paediatric, child and youth health nursing. You will have the opportunity to develop clinical knowledge and understanding in your selected area and build on your theoretical and clinical learning with the opportunity to demonstrate competence, based on standards established by the Australian Confederation of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses.
Objectives
On the successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- Identify your own learning needs and develop a learning contract to meet those needs;
- Develop strategies to support your own learning;
- Discuss the professional and practice development issues relevant to the clinical area chosen;
- Apply principles of primary health care and family-centred nursing practice in clinical settings;
- Demonstrate knowledge for practice appropriate to the area of clinical focus;
- Demonstrate appropriate and effective nursing care in your chosen clinical area; and
- Plan, implement and evaluate care for children and families in the context of the chosen clinical area.
Content
Students will develop a learning contract to address learning needs. The chosen clinical area could include community child health, youth health, acute paediatrics, paediatric oncology, paediatric critical care, parent support or residential care. To assist students in developing a learning contract and to explore professional and practice issues in paediatric, child and youth health nursing the following modules are included: developing as a lifelong learner, self assessment and developing a learning contract; reflective practice in paediatric, child and youth health nursing; evidence based practice; advanced practice; health policy development and health service evaluation.
Approaches to Teaching and Learning
Student learning will be supported with a Unit Information, Study Guide and Book of Readings. Online discussion will supplement the written materials. Students will complete the equivalent of 6 weeks supernumerary or work place based clinical placement in this unit. The clinical portfolio provides guidance for students in clinical activities and clinical assessment.
